Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about the new networking infrastructure that enables a seamless digital learning journey for all citizens.

General questions

  • The networking infrastructure “Mein Bildungsraum”, aims to provide a seamless digital learning journey for all citizens.

    This includes the ability to save and share digitally singed documents, collaborate across institutions and access various education providers and institutions via a single singn on.

  • The current development state and tesatble beta functionality can be viewed in the technical documentation.

     

  • We are in discussions with various education providers to connect them to the networking infrastructure. We are also in dialog with the federal states and are piloting initial applications such as the digital school report in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate.

  • As part of the “Deutscher Aufbau- und Resilienzplan (DARP)”, up to 630 million euros have been earmarked for the development and implementation of the networking infrastructure, including accompanying activities. This amount also includes an increase in the INVITE innovation competition and other platform projects.

    The expenses for "Mein Bildungsraum" are comprised of conception and development services funding. Additionally, accompanying support measures and the development of teaching and learning opportunities is supported.

Product

  • Various teams are involved in the component development for the networking infrastructure. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research uses a dynamic procurement system to put the individual work packages out to tender. This makes it possible to react flexibly to new requirements and reduces the hurdles for smaller service providers to participate in the tendering process.

  • The networking infrastructure comprises five components that will contain a variety of functions:

    • Digital identities will enable users to access various offerings with one login (single sign-on) and prove their identity.
    • The repository will allow users to receive, save and send files (for example, credentials and certificates).
    • Digital credentials can be signed, verified and withdrawn if required.
    • The storefront will allow users to access an individual workspace and be able to collaborate with each other.
    • The data room will provide a directory of education providers and learning offerings.

  • No, the networking infrastructure will merely provide uniform access to various learning opportunities and show users suitable offers on request. The design of the learning content is the sole responsibility of our partners.

  • The digital education space as a networked education ecosystem can be continuously expanded to include new educational offerings.

    All technical developments are based on open or openly developed standards. The architecture can therefore be expanded in an application-oriented manner.

We are delighted to talk to you about what a connection to the networking infrastructure looks like for you and to provide you with test access if you are interested. Our aim is to gradually increase the number of connected providers after launch of the beta version in fall 2023. In this way, we will ensure that the networking infrastructure provides valuable offers for all ages and realities of life.

  • All components of the networking infrastructure are being developed in accordance with the federal government's IT accessibility requirements.

  • Quite a lot. All technical developments are published as open source with appropriate licensing and documented on Github.

  • Data protection and data security have a very high priority in the development of the networking infrastructure. The security concept is implemented in accordance with the IT baseline protection standards of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI).

    The networking infrastructure itself does not store any personal data. Information can be managed by users in their own repository and shared with education providers.
