Mock-Up Darstellung der neuen Flutter App

A look at product management: "Mein Bildungsraum" app

The “Mein Bildungsraum” app is the central interface for managing your own data and documents and communicating with education providers. It has been in the beta phase since October 2023. We provide a brief insight into the current state of development and the technical challenges on the way to the finished product. “Mein Bildungsraum” comprises five technical components: Digital Identities, Wallet, Digital Certificates, Data Space and Showroom. The app (wallet component) of “Mein Bildungsraum” is the central interface for managing your own data and documents and communicating with education providers. It has been in the beta phase since October 2023. We provide a brief insight into the current state of development and the technical challenges on the way to the finished product.

App features: Possible use cases

The app offers users a central repository for personal information and documents used in the educational context, such as certificates, diplomas or certificates of attendance. This data and documents can be managed using the app and easily forwarded to selected education providers via a central communication interface. All data is stored securely, encrypted and locally. In the app, users can see what data they have shared, when and with whom. This enables complete data sovereignty.

The app is now available to download from the Apple Store and Google Play Store.

A possible example of a use case in a school context would be: The student Koko links her “Mein Bildungsraum” app to her school's website and logs in using her “Mein Bildungsraum”-ID. She requests her current school report in order to apply for an internship. The contact and data exchange takes place directly via her smartphone. Koko's certificate is then digitally signed and securely stored on her own device.

Another potential use scenario in a university context would be: Bill wants to start his degree course next semester and has already chosen a suitable degree programme. He registers with the desired university using his Bildungsraum-ID and adds it to the contact list of his “Mein Bildungsraum” app. He can now use the app to send all the personal data and documents required for the application process to the university. In the app on his tablet, he can see what data he has shared, when and with whom at any time. He can also use the app to find out which preparatory course would suit his chosen subject. He registers and takes part in the course until the start of his studies in order to optimally prepare himself.

First feedback from test users

Since October 2023, the first users have been able to put the functionalities of “Mein Bildungsraum” to the test using various scenarios. We have already made a number of adjustments based on the feedback and implemented new technical functionalities in the app:

  • We have fixed technical bugs and revised the inbox for incoming and outgoing messages to education providers.
  • We have also added a short explanatory video to explain how the app works and give users a tour of the app when they first open it.
  • We have also added another menu item that allows users to view their own data and documents.

Flutter replaces UI5: The technical genesis

Technologically, the app solution is based on Enmeshed as a programming framework with a source code that can be viewed and used by everyone (a so-called open source framework). The barrier-free solution has already been used in the research and development project Bildungsraum Digital, or BIRD for short, which played a key role in designing the prototype of “Mein Bildungsraum”.

In the beta version of “Mein Bildungsraum”, the wallet is offered as a web app based on the JavaScript framework OpenUI5. In order to be able to develop the app as a hybrid and on a code basis for all operating systems (Android and Apple), the development teams switched to the “Flutter-App” framework. This is an equally open-source user interface development kit from Google.

The Flutter app is currently only visible in the test environment. The full range of functions should be available soon. The new app will then be released.
