Put Through its Paces: First Results of the Beta Test already Implemented

The beta version of “Mein Bildungsraum”, the first minimally functional version of the network infrastructure, was released in October 2023. Since then, the first users have had the opportunity to test it. Based on the feedback from testers, we continue to develop our programme. We have already made a number of adjustments and implemented new technical functionalities.

How does user feedback reach us?

Since 10 October 2023, the first users have been able to test the functionalities of “Mein Bildungsraum” in different scenarios. The first group of testers includes people who are familiar with the project, network partners and funded research and development projects in the field of education.

We receive feedback through a number of channels: Firstly, users can give us direct feedback by e-mail. We also provide a questionnaire for them to evaluate their own user experience. In-depth insights are gained through one-on-one testing. Small test groups, accompanied by our UI/UX team, scrutinise individual components (e.g. the wallet app) and functionalities (e.g. the search function) of “Mein Bildungsraum”.

In addition, we also organise demo workshops and webinars. These give test users the opportunity to provide verbal feedback. A wider audience is reached through live tests or live demos as part of professional exchange meetings and events. Participants then share their impressions with us. We have used these formats at the first National Conference on Continuing Education and Training, the German government's Digital Summit and a DAAD workshop. More conferences are already on the agenda.

To what extent does feedback influence current development?

We are constantly working on software bugs, usability issues and functional requirements. This means, for example:

  • We fix technical bugs and errors, such as login difficulties, long loading times or spelling mistakes, based on feedback from test users.
  • We improve usability by checking all text for clarity and adding explanations and graphics where necessary.
  • We adapt the user interface in each component. For example, the navigation of the workbench, the learning path finder and the wallet app has been revised to make it more intuitive for users.
  • Within the demo system, we work with mock websites that serve as examples for the players in the education landscape. Based on user feedback, we have added pop-ups to these mock websites with information about the technical processes taking place in the background.
  • We are also making information about how personal data is handled even more transparent by adding easy-to-understand explanations of what data is stored where and what data can be viewed by third parties.
  • For the wallet app, we added a short tutorial video to explain how it works and give users a tour of the app when they first open it. We also added another menu item that allows users to view their own data and documents.

What’s next?

As the beta test progresses, the number of test users will be gradually increased. The feedback will continue to flow into the product development to ensure that “Mein Bildungsraum” continues to evolve in a user-centred way. At the same time, more education providers will be connected in order to increase the reach and scope of “Mein Bildungsraum”.
